Deep Condolence for Manado

Who would ever know that on 15th January 2014 there would be big flood and landslides in Manado, North Sulawesi. According to some reliable information, the water was getting high up early in the morning. People who lived very close to the river had been very panic with the situation. As the light of the day came, the situation was worse. The one coming was not merely water, but also mud. Seeing this people fled to higher places.

Four rivers in Manado overflew in a very short time. It overflew the major office, the downtown and the densely populated area. In a matter of time, thousands of souls were homeless. They fled to schools, hotels, second floor of the building and many other higher grounds only to rescue their souls. The deluge was so much, beyond words could describe, that it overflew the town. In a sudden time, the city became paralyzed. For two nights, people stayed in refugee's camp or place.

Many roads and bridges broke up as the result of the flood. Several points on the main road to Tomohon, the one and only access from Manado collapsed. It was caused by the landslide. Not only it collapsed but also it killed 6 people, crushed two houses and wrecked several cars and motorbikes. The victims were sheltering under the house when it happened. Three of them survived but the rest couldn't make it. Some of the corpses were found buried under deep mud.

After the devastation, the city became so eery. Darkness were all over the downtown because the electricity was off. So did the water. Several days after the catastrophe, people couldn't clean their muddy house for lack of fresh water. They couldn't cook for when the flood came the stoves and all cooking tools were swept by the flood. Pictures of gloomy and distressful situation were posted to Social Media. Even the hash tag in twitter #PrayForManado once became the second trending of twitter.

The flood and the landslides killed around 30 people. Now, the city is reviving, but it stills need many helping hand. For example, many people remain homeless because their house were crushed by the landslide or swept by the flood. Many people don't have anything left but their clothes sticking to their body. The access from Manado to southern city is either temporary closed or permanently. According to the governor, the ground had become very labile. He is afraid that can caused another problem. However, there wasn't any rapid solution. Temporarily, the longer route consumes twice or not triple times longer than the normal time has been applied.

We could only hope that the project would start soon.
