Climbing Mount Lokon: Series of Pictures

Mount Lokon, 1598 m from sea level. However, most climbers only reach the crater and returns,  like we did on this trip. Credited to Highland Resort and Nature Tours for the amazing arrangement. We reach the elevation of 1,131 m from sea level with a woman aged 64.

Here are some tips of approaching an active volcano creater:

  1. Find out whether or not the mountain is a volcano
  2. Find out the last eruption, visiting a Volcano Observatory could be a perfect option to see the history of the volcano too. But if volcano observatory is out of reach, see out the nature sign.
  3. Do climbing on your pace.
  4. Having local buddy or more certified tour guide is another option on having good experience on the volcano
  5. On occassion of volcano activitiy is high, always pay attantion to several things as follows: the animals, is there any animal nearby, can you see birds flying or can you hear their singing,  if not it might means they have fleed for evacuation; second, the temperature of the day, most of the time the temperature on near the volcano is cool, exception for the volcano is an island, therefore, if the temperature is hotter than it should appear, you should consider on getting closer to the crater; then the smell of nature, if you could smell nature on your escalating, it means it is safe climbing but if most of the time you smell sulfur eventhough the crater is still far away,  you should consider on approaching the crater. Next, feel the ground movement. Sometimes it is good to just seat and relax on the hike, it is because you can feel the tremor too. If on your hike, you feel tremor gets stronger and steonger, you will also consider on coming closer to the crater.
  6. Should you hike with child or aged people, consider your safety. Following the lava river can be very tricky. Having a good foodwear does not always guarantee your safety. Pay attention to the path you take. Having several stops is better to prevent you from further injuries. Always keep in mind that if you have reached the end point of the hike, you are still half way of the total trip. Unless your pretty strong yourself, consider on having several stops on going down as well. Especially if the climbing or walking take more than 45 minutes. Giving your muscle a bit relax is wise to prevent from injury.
  7. It is better to take a long sleeve, trousers, hat and a pair of glove on your backpack, just in case you are going to go through bushy areas. Some leaves are very sharp and are able to cut your hands. It is also a good protection from the sun and unwanted bite of insects.
  8. Always carry your own drink, only drink when you seat. Some research says that when you drink on standing position it will not bring you out of thirsty, even worse it will damage your throat and belly. Before and after hike, it is also good to have some cola drinks, it does not mater whether it is cold or normal.
  9. Always carry a drybag or plastic bag for your own gadget.
  10. On occassion of sudden heavy rain, avoid the lava river. It could bring volcanic matterials with the rain water. Just protect your gadgets, find a shelter as soon as possible and wait until the rain stop. Before continue the hike, whether going up or down, always pay attention to the level of water. This is helpful to avoid volcanic material flood on the lava river.
We understand that there are still many things lacking from this tips,  as we are not expert on volcano. However these are basic consideration on approaching an active volcano. To understand more of the volcano, it is better to go to the volcano observatory and ask them question.

Last but not least, have a nice trekking.
